I am sure you have all taken photographs only to find that when you get home and view your photographs on a larger screen, they look a little disappointing and are not at all reminiscent of the scene as you remember it.
You were shooting your photographs in RAW, just like everyone had told you to do and you know that you ensured that your camera settings were all correct for the scene you were shooting, but your photograph still appears a little flat.
Well, this is because by shooting your photograph in RAW, your camera has captured the entire dynamic range within the scene and has not applied any automatic image tuning. What this means is that you now have the ability to manipulate all that data using your preferred editing software. This process is much like old film photographers used to be able to do in the darkroom. However, software is much more powerful and capable of so much more than was possible in the darkroom.
Check out some of the edited versions of our original photograph shown below and you will get an idea of the sort of things that are possible with a little editing.
We can even start adding some artistic effects to our photographs using iPhone apps like Snapseed and DistressedFX to give our photograph a totally different feel.
You can of course use the filters that are available within your phones own editing software and a large number of apps, these can give some wonderful immediate changes to your photographs. However, if you are serious about your photography and want to create that WOW!!! factor, then I would highly encourage you to look at taking full control of the editing process from start to finish, using software such as Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe Photoshop, or some great alternatives like Affinity Photo or even the free open source product Gimp, you will then be able to create truly amazing photographs that all your friends and family will be proud of and perhaps even a little jealous of.
